Šumber
Šumber is a historic village and castle ruin situated in the municipality of Sveta Nedelja within Istria County, Croatia. Located on the eastern side of the Istrian peninsula, the settlement lies approximately five kilometers northwest of Nedešćina and ten kilometers from Labin. Perched at an elevation of 177 meters, the site occupies a strategic position that was originally a prehistoric hillfort known as Stari Grad. While the exact construction date of the medieval fortress remains unknown, the location holds significant historical depth, with written records mentioning the village as early as 872 and 950 AD. These early documents notably confirm the presence of Slavic communities in the region during the Byzantine era under Emperor Constantine VII.
The architectural layout of Castle Šumber features a small fortress with a distinctive polygonal design, defended by two round half-towers positioned at the south-eastern and south-western corners. The main entrance is found on the western wall adjacent to the south-western tower. Inside the enclosure, visitors can observe the ruins of a long, narrow palace attached to the southern wall and a smaller house in the northeastern corner. Historical engravings from 1680 by Valvasor suggest that the towers and residential wings were once several stories tall, indicating a more substantial structure than what remains today. Although largely preserved in its ruined state, the site offers a clear view of its defensive origins and medieval evolution.
Historically, the castle and its surrounding territory passed into the possession of the Schönberg family, Austrian nobles who served as vassals to the Counts of Gorizia in 1260. It is from this prominent family that the modern toponym Šumber most likely originated. Today, the site stands as a testament to the region's complex feudal history and architectural heritage. While the residential sections have succumbed to time, the robust defensive walls and towers remain visible landmarks. The village currently functions as a quiet rural community with a population of roughly 358 people, preserving the legacy of its ancient fortifications amidst the Istrian landscape.

- Notes
- Šumber medieval castle with its lower ward was built at the place of the former pre-historical hillfort in the Old town small village. In 1260, the castle came into the possession of Schönberg - the Austrian noble family, after whom Šumber was named. Since 1367, it has been a part of the Pazin principality and has become a border fortress between the Austrian and Venetian part of Istria. Due to the extinction of the Schönberg family, Šumber became part of the Kožljak settlement at the end of the 14th century.
