Kršan
Kršan is a historic village and municipality situated in the eastern part of Istria County, Croatia. Located on a rocky karst hill west of the Učka mountain and southwest of the Čepić field, the settlement lies along the D64 state road between Pazin and Vozilići. The site is strategically positioned approximately 12 kilometers north of Labin and 22 kilometers southeast of Pazin. The name Kršan, also known historically as Chersano, is traditionally derived from the local karst terrain, reflecting the rugged geological foundation upon which the original fortress was constructed.
The medieval castle at Kršan holds significant historical value, with its first documented mention occurring in 1274 under the name Castrum Carsach. The fortress was originally destroyed during a conflict in 1268 involving the Patriarch of Aquileia and the Counts of Gorizia but was subsequently rebuilt in the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century by Henry III, Count of Gorizia. For over a century, the castle existed under a unique dual governance structure shared between the Counts of Gorizia and the Aquileia church. Following the extinction of the Gorizia line in 1374, the property did not revert to the patriarchate but instead passed to the Habsburg family, who granted it to their vassals, the Krotendorfer family.
Today, Kršan exists as a split settlement, with the preserved old town and castle ruins remaining on the hilltop while the modern village has developed along the main road below. Although the provided text cuts off regarding later ownership details, the site remains a notable landmark of Istrian heritage. An engraving from 1679 by Valvasor captures the appearance of the town during the Habsburg era, serving as a visual record of its long-standing presence in the region. The municipality currently functions as a residential area with a population of roughly 2,800 people, maintaining its connection to the ancient fortified past that defines its identity.
