Oyster Rock

Oyster Rock is a small, heavily fortified island located within Mumbai Harbour in Mumbai, India. While the exact year of its original construction is not detailed in available records, the site has long served as a strategic military asset and is currently owned and operated by the Indian Navy. The island functions as a key component of the harbor's defense infrastructure, maintaining an active status that prioritizes national security over public access or commercial development.

The site holds distinct historical significance due to its role in naval traditions and protocol. Whenever the Admiral of the Fleet departs or arrives with the naval fleet, the island becomes the focal point of a ceremonial guard of honor. During these events, sailors line the entire perimeter of the rock to execute a traditional 21-gun salute, marking the importance of the occasion. For a brief period, the islet also served as a naval museum, though this usage was temporary and has since ceased as the facility returned to exclusive military operations.

In recent history, Oyster Rock was at the center of a notable development proposal. In 2008, the Mumbai Port Trust suggested converting the location into an International Cruise Terminal to boost tourism and infrastructure. However, this plan was officially rejected by the Indian Navy in 2009. Citing heightened security concerns following the devastating 2008 Mumbai attacks, the Navy refused to grant permission for the project, ensuring the island remained a secured defense outpost rather than a civilian transit hub. Today, it stands as a restricted, guarded fixture of the Mumbai coastline.
