Montfort Castle

Montfort Castle is a historic Crusader fortress located in the Upper Galilee region of northern Israel, situated approximately 22 miles northeast of Haifa and just south of the Lebanese border. Nestled within the Nahal Kziv Nature Reserve, the site is now designated as a national park and remains open to the public as a significant tourist destination. The structure was originally constructed between 1228 and 1240, with further developments occurring in the 1260s, by the Teutonic Order on land purchased from the French de Milly family. Built primarily from limestone, the castle is classified as a spur castle and stands as one of the finest examples of fortified military architecture from the Kingdom of Jerusalem era.

The name Montfort derives from the French words for strong mountain, a meaning preserved in its German name, Starkenberg. Historically, the castle served as the principal fortress of the Teutonic Order in the Latin East during its brief period of active use from 1230 to 1271. Its strategic importance led to notable sieges in 1266 and 1271, the latter resulting in its capture by Mamluk forces. Today, the castle exists in a ruined condition, yet it retains an elongated central domestic wing that highlights its unique architectural layout. Archaeological discoveries at the site, including luxury items and board games, offer valuable insights into the daily lives of its former inhabitants.

As part of a protected nature reserve, Montfort Castle combines historical significance with natural beauty, attracting visitors from both within Israel and abroad. Although no longer inhabited or militarily active, the ruins provide a tangible connection to the Crusader period and the specific history of the Teutonic Knights in the Holy Land. The site continues to be studied by historians and archaeologists, ensuring that its legacy as a key stronghold in medieval military history is preserved for future generations while serving as an educational and recreational resource in the modern era.
