Beaufort Castle

Beaufort Castle is a historic site located in the town of Beaufort in eastern Luxembourg. Dating back to the 11th century, the complex uniquely combines the atmospheric ruins of a medieval fortress with an adjacent residential building constructed in the 17th century. The original structure began as a small, square-shaped fortress situated on a large rock, protected by a moat and additional defensive walls overlooking the valley. Over the centuries, it underwent significant architectural evolution, including the addition of a keep in the 12th century and a large wing featuring cross-framed windows in the 16th century. These modifications reflect a blend of medieval military design and later residential styles adapted by various noble families.

The castle possesses a rich and turbulent history marked by changes in ownership and conflict. It passed through the hands of the House of Orley and later Johann Bayer von Boppard before becoming the seat of the Velbrück family. Its history took a dramatic turn during the Dutch resistance when owner Gaspard de Heu was executed for treason, leading to Spanish confiscation. Following damage sustained during the Thirty Years War, the property was acquired by Governor Johann Baron von Beck, who initiated the construction of the new residence completed in 1649. After falling into disrepair and serving as a stone quarry in the early 19th century, the site was designated a national monument in 1850.

Today, Beaufort Castle is owned by the State of Luxembourg, having been acquired by the government in 1981 following earlier restoration efforts that cleared rubble and opened the medieval sections to the public. The estate is currently open for visitors, offering a tangible connection to the region's feudal past. The site stands as a testament to centuries of architectural adaptation and historical intrigue, preserving both the stark ruins of the original fortress and the more intact elements of the later residence for educational and tourism purposes.
