Migdal Afek

Migdal Afek, also known as Migdal Tsedek, is a national park located on the southeastern edge of Rosh HaAyin in Israel. The site encompasses layers of history spanning from the second century BCE, when it served as a walled Jewish settlement destroyed by Romans in 67 CE, through the Byzantine era. A notable surviving artifact from the Byzantine period is a stone lintel featuring a Greek inscription dedicated to Saint Kyriko, which later served practical purposes under Ottoman rule. During the Crusader period, the strategic location hosted the castle of Mirabel within the Kingdom of Jerusalem, establishing the site as a significant military stronghold before it eventually became the Palestinian village of Majdal Yaba.

The current visible ruins primarily consist of a fortified manor house constructed in the nineteenth century by Sheikh Sadek al-Rayyan, after whom the Hebrew name Migdal Tsedek is derived. This Ottoman-era structure was built directly atop the earlier remains of the Crusader castle, creating a unique architectural blend where medieval fortifications support a later feudal residence. The complex includes a courtyard that has undergone restoration, allowing visitors to observe the distinct historical phases of construction. The architecture reflects its evolution from a religious shrine and military fortress into a local sheikh's estate, utilizing existing ancient materials like the inscribed doorway for new functional uses such as stables.

Today, Migdal Afek serves as an open-air historical site and national park where visitors can explore the juxtaposition of different eras. The condition of the site preserves the atmospheric ruins of the crusader foundations alongside the more intact walls of the nineteenth-century manor. Its historical significance lies in its continuous occupation and adaptation over two millennia, representing Jewish, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, and Ottoman influences in one location. The park offers a tangible connection to the depopulated village of Majdal Yaba while highlighting the enduring legacy of the Rayyan family's tenure at this strategically important tower.
