Cafarlet

Cafarlet, also known historically as Capharleth or Kafr Lam, is an ancient coastal fortress situated within the modern Moshav HaBonim in the Central District of Israel. Built during the 8th or 9th century under the Umayyad or Abbasid caliphates, the structure originally served as a ribat, a defensive outpost designed to protect against Byzantine naval incursions. Architecturally, it is distinct for featuring round watchtowers, a design element that marks its Early Muslim origins and differentiates it from the rectangular towers typical of later European Crusader fortifications in the region. The site represents a rare surviving example of a Roman-style castrum adapted for early Islamic coastal defense.

Throughout its long history, the fortress changed hands numerous times, reflecting the turbulent geopolitical landscape of the Levant. After its initial construction, it was significantly modified and reused by the Kingdom of Jerusalem before coming under the control of prominent military orders, including the Knights Hospitaller and the Knights Templar. Subsequent rulers included the Mamluk Sultanate and the Ottoman Empire, each leaving their mark on the site's evolution. This continuous occupation by major historical powers underscores its strategic importance as a guardian of the coastline over many centuries.

Today, Cafarlet exists as a ruin but remains accessible to the public for exploration. While the structure has suffered the ravages of time, its core features, particularly the distinctive round towers, still stand as a testament to its pre-Crusader heritage. The site offers visitors a tangible connection to the layered history of the area, from early Muslim defense strategies to the era of the Crusades. Located on the lands of the abandoned Arab village of Kafr Lam, the fortress serves as both an archaeological landmark and a historical monument within the modern Israeli landscape.
