Lapšina Castle

Lapšina Castle
wikipedia

Lapšina Castle is a ruined hilltop fortification located in the village of Lapšina within Međimurje County, Croatia. Constructed during the second half of the 16th century, the structure was strategically positioned on an elevated site 179 meters above sea level near the banks of the Mura River. This location provided a critical defensive advantage against threats from the Turkish Empire during the early modern period. The castle featured a relatively large, indented ground plan equipped with several defensive towers and tiled roofing, reflecting its military importance at the time of construction.

The estate originally served as the residence for the Mlakovečki noble family, though historical records attribute its initial construction to either Juraj IV Zrinski or his advisor, Nikola I Mlakovečki. Following Nikola I's death in 1603, ownership transferred through various prominent families, including Baron Locatelle, the Savoyan Marquis de Prye, and the Patačić family. The site experienced significant turmoil, notably in 1708 when it was devastated by the Hungarian army under Francis II Rákóczi. Eventually, the Althann family acquired the entire Lapšina estate, marking a later chapter in its aristocratic lineage before the property began to decline.

After the departure of the Althann counts, the castle suffered from poor maintenance and gradual decay. By the first decades of the 20th century, the once-formidable fortress had deteriorated significantly, and by the 1930s, it was ruined down to its foundations. Today, Lapšina Castle exists only as an archaeological site and ruin. While no longer habitable or open for traditional tourism, the location remains a subject of historical interest and geophysical research conducted by local museums to preserve the memory of this former stronghold in the Međimurje region.
