# Kenjalgad Fort

Kenjalgad Fort, also known as Ghera Khelanja Fort, is a historic hill fort located in the Satara District of Maharashtra, India, approximately 11 miles northwest of Wai. Situated on the Mandhardev spur of the Mahadev hill range, the fort is distinguishable from a considerable distance by its prominent stone scarp rising 30 to 40 feet above the surrounding terrain. The fort features a rhomboid shape and is constructed primarily of stone, standing at an elevation of 4,269 feet. The structure encompasses an area with a 388-meter long axis and 175-meter short axis.

The fort is believed to have been constructed by Bhoja II of Panhala during the 12th century. Throughout its history, Kenjalgad changed hands multiple times among various rulers including Adilshah of Bijapur in 1648, the renowned Maratha leader Shivaji in 1674, Aurangzeb in 1701, and finally the British in 1818. Shivaji captured the fort through a surprise military campaign while marching from Chiplun, successfully ambushing the garrison.

Today, Kenjalgad Fort exists as ruins owned by the Government of India and managed by the Forest Department, remaining open to the public. The site features several notable structures including rock-cut steps, lime mixers, a water tank, and remnants of the original fortifications such as the magazine room and Kacheri building. The fort is accessible via multiple trekking routes from nearby villages and can be reached throughout the year, though visibility diminishes during monsoon season.
