Fairy Castle (Parigala)
Parigala, known locally as Pəriqala and translated as Fairy Castle, is a mysterious archaeological site located in the Zaqatala District of northwest Azerbaijan. Situated approximately 300 meters up a steep cliff face in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, the structure overlooks the village of Yuxarı Çardaqlar. This unique limestone brick building consists of three rooms with a single window and is believed to have been constructed during the Caucasian Albanian period, likely between the fourth and eighth centuries. Its remote placement and difficult access have contributed to its status as one of the country's lesser-known historical treasures, preserving it from heavy tourism and modern development.
Accessing the castle requires significant physical effort and mountaineering skill, as visitors must navigate a forty-meter stairway reinforced with ancient oak beams and a covered walkway. Local guides have installed an additional ladder to facilitate entry to the elevated site. Although the structure remains in generally good repair, evidence suggests it has suffered some damage over time, possibly from seismic activity, as the top of the stairway has separated from the rock face. Significant wear on the limestone blocks indicates that the site was inhabited for a considerable period, serving as a dwelling or refuge for its original residents long ago.
The name Parigala stems from local legend involving a female figure named Pari, adding a layer of folklore to its historical significance. While specific details about its original owners or precise function remain part of historical mystery, the site stands as a testament to the architectural capabilities of the Caucasian Albanian era. Today, it serves primarily as an intriguing destination for adventurous historians and explorers willing to undertake the challenging climb to witness this ancient cliffside fortress firsthand.
