Engelsholm Castle

Engelsholm Castle is a historic manor house situated 14 kilometers west of Vejle in south-western Denmark, overlooking the scenic Engelsholm Lake. While the estate's history dates back to the 15th century when it was acquired from the crown in 1452, the current main building was constructed between 1592 and 1593. Commissioned by Knud Brahe, brother of the famous astronomer Tycho Brahe, the structure was originally designed as a two-storey Renaissance castle featuring four corner towers. Although the specific architect remains unconfirmed, historical records suggest the involvement of prominent figures such as Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder. In the mid-18th century, the castle underwent significant renovations to adapt it to the Baroque style, resulting in a white-washed façade with a black-glazed tile roof and distinctive onion domes atop its towers.

The property boasts a rich lineage of ownership, including the Brahe family for over a century and the renowned Admiral Niels Juel, who held the estate briefly during the 1780s. Following the sale of most surrounding lands in 1931 and the demolition of adjacent farm buildings, the castle found a new purpose in 1939 when it was purchased to serve as a folk high school. Since 1952, it has operated as a self-owning institution dedicated to artistic education. Today, Engelsholm Castle functions as a vibrant cultural hub specializing in music and visual arts courses. To accommodate modern needs, additional housing for students and faculty was constructed nearby based on designs by architect Jens Malling Pedersen, ensuring the site remains an active center for learning while preserving its architectural heritage.
