Crupet Castle

Crupet Castle, also known as Carondelet Castle, is a historic medieval structure located in the village of Crupet within the municipality of Assesse in the province of Namur, Wallonia, Belgium. Dating back to the 11th or 12th century, the site functions as a moated donjon or fortified farmhouse, locally referred to as a ferme-château. Originally constructed during the early medieval period, the lords who inhabited the fortress eventually became vassals of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The architecture reflects its dual purpose as both a defensive stronghold and an agricultural center, characterized by its surrounding water defenses and sturdy stone construction typical of the region's rural fortifications.

The castle possesses a rich lineage of ownership that highlights its historical significance in the area. It remained in the hands of the Crupet family until 1510, after which it passed to the Carondelet family, whose name and heraldic crest are still visible throughout the property today. In 1667, ownership transferred via marriage to the prominent Mérode family, who retained control of the estate until the upheaval of the French Revolution. This renovation helped preserve the building for future generations, allowing it to remain in the possession of the Limbosch family from the early 20th century until 2008.
