Burg Festenburg

Burg Festenburg is a historic monastery castle located in the village of Festenburg within the municipality of St. Lorenzen am Wechsel in Styria, Austria. Originally constructed around the year 1200 by the Lords of Stubenberg under the name Vöstenburg, the structure has witnessed significant historical events, including unsuccessful sieges by Ottoman forces in 1529 and 1532 during the First Turkish Siege of Vienna. In 1616, the fortress was purchased by Vorau Abbey from the Counts of Saurau. Between 1700 and 1723, the abbey extensively expanded and transformed the military fortification into a monastery, marking a pivotal shift in its architectural purpose and style from a defensive stronghold to a religious center.

In the modern era, the castle serves as the Roman Catholic parish church of Saint Catherine, with the former knight's hall consecrated for religious services. The interior features notable artistic contributions, including frescoes painted by Johann Cyriak Hackhofer from Vorau. Beyond its religious function, the site preserves cultural history through a small museum dedicated to Ottokar Kernstock, a canon, pastor, and writer who resided there from 1889 to 1928; his reception room, workspace, and bedroom remain accessible to the public. The castle courtyard also hosts an annual concert by the traditional band Festenburg im Burghof, maintaining a link to local traditions.

Today, Burg Festenburg is open to visitors for guided tours from May through September, offering access to its unique blend of military and ecclesiastical history. Holy Mass is celebrated on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, keeping the spiritual legacy of the site alive. The property stands as a testament to over four centuries of ownership by the Abbey of Vorau, a milestone previously highlighted during a special exhibition commemorating the years 1616 to 2016. It remains a key landmark in Eastern Styria, combining architectural heritage with active community use.
