Burg Bernstein
Bernstein Castle is a historic fortress located in Bernstein im Burgenland, Austria, situated approximately 615 meters above sea level. While the site likely existed as early as 860 during the era of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, the structure was first officially mentioned in the 13th century after becoming part of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1199. Throughout its long history, the castle changed hands frequently among notable figures, including Hungarian kings, the Kőszegi family, and Emperor Frederick III. It served as a critical defensive stronghold, successfully withstanding multiple sieges by Ottoman forces in 1529 and 1532, as well as an attack by Stephen Bocskay's army in 1604.
The architectural character of the castle evolved significantly following a gunpowder explosion in 1617. This event prompted owner Ludwig Königsberg to rebuild the inner Gothic sections in the Baroque style, a renovation that involved removing the original keep and towers to modernize the defense system. After passing through the Batthyány family in the 17th century, ownership eventually transferred to the Almásy dynasty in the late 19th century. The family retains ownership of the property to this day, having preserved major parts of the structure through centuries of conflict and renovation.
Currently, Bernstein Castle remains in good condition and is open to the public. Since 1953, a portion of the historic building has been adapted for commercial use, operating as a hotel and restaurant while maintaining its cultural heritage. The site offers visitors a glimpse into its layered past, from its Slavic origins and medieval fortifications to its transformation into a Baroque refuge. Today, it stands not only as a monument to regional military history but also as a functioning establishment that continues to welcome guests within its ancient walls.
