Borač Fortress
Borač Fortress, also known as Borač na Kršu, is a medieval strategic fortification located on a rocky hill approximately ten kilometers northwest of Knić in central Serbia. Constructed primarily of stone during the 14th century under the direction of Despot Stefan Lazarević, the site sits atop Borački krš, a geological formation within an inactive volcano that is over twenty million years old. The architects skillfully incorporated the natural rock formations into the defensive walls, creating a structure that blended seamlessly with its rugged environment. The complex was divided into two distinct sections: the Big Town to the northeast and the Small Town to the southwest, featuring towers with irregular bases and robust bulwarks designed for maximum protection.
Historically, the area has been inhabited since ancient times, initially serving as a Roman observation post before evolving into a significant Serbian district center by the 12th century. The fortress gained prominence in 1389 as a residence for Princess Milica following the death of her husband, Prince Lazar, and later served as a key administrative hub where important charters were issued. Despite additional reinforcements ordered by Despot Đurađ Branković in the early 15th century to bolster defenses against Ottoman expansion, the fortress was ultimately conquered and completely razed by Sultan Murad II in 1438. Today, the site exists as protected ruins, recognized as a Cultural Monument of Great Importance by the Serbian government.
Although the main fortification was destroyed centuries ago, the location remains open to the public and offers a glimpse into Serbia's medieval military history. While only fragments of the original walls, towers, and building foundations survive, the nearby Church of Saint Archangel Mihailo remains well-preserved as a testament to the era of Stefan Lazarević. The combination of archaeological significance, unique volcanic geography, and its role in pivotal historical events makes Borač a notable destination for those interested in the region's heritage. The ruins stand as a silent reminder of the fierce conflicts that shaped the Balkans during the late Middle Ages.
