Kruševac Fortress

Kruševac Fortress, also known as the City of Prince Lazar, is a medieval fortification located in Kruševac, within the Šumadija and Western Serbia Region of Serbia. Constructed in 1381 by Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović, the stone structure served as the capital of Moravian Serbia and the seat of his royal court. The architectural style reflects typical medieval defensive designs, featuring a prominent Donjon tower that acted as the main entrance and provided access to the city walls via internal staircases. A unique characteristic of the tower was its exterior plastering with pebbles, a rare stylistic choice that reportedly inspired the later Ottoman name for the site, Aladža Hisar, meaning Colorful City.

Historically, the fortress held immense strategic importance as the political center of Prince Lazar's realm until his successor, Stefan Lazarević, moved the capital to Belgrade in 1405. The site witnessed significant conflicts during the 15th century, including a major battle in 1454 where Ottoman forces suffered heavy casualties before Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror personally intervened to capture the city. Under Ottoman rule, the complex was repurposed, and the historic Lazarica Church, originally built by Prince Lazar, was vandalized and utilized for gunpowder storage. The fortress changed hands multiple times between Serbian despots, Hungarians, and Ottoman Turks before final incorporation into the Ottoman Empire.

Today, Kruševac Fortress exists primarily as an archaeological site and ruin, though it remains open to the public. While much of the original hard town has disappeared, visitors can still view the surviving Donjon Tower and sections of the eastern wall. The best-preserved element of the former capital is the palace church of Saint Stephen, known as Lazarica, which stands as a testament to the site's religious and cultural heritage. The location serves as a historical monument commemorating the legacy of Prince Lazar and the medieval Serbian state.
