Bogesund Castle

Bogesund Castle is a historic former manor house situated on the Bogesundslandet peninsula within the Bogesundslandet nature reserve in Vaxholm Municipality, Sweden. Located approximately 15 kilometers east of Stockholm and just two kilometers west of the settlement of Karlsudd, the structure commands a strategic position overlooking the main shipping channel entering and exiting the capital through the Stockholm archipelago. The original building was constructed around 1640 under the initiative of the prominent Swedish statesman Per Brahe the Younger. While the core structure dates to the mid-17th century, the castle has undergone several transformations throughout its existence, evolving from a simple manor into the distinctive landmark seen today.

The architectural character of Bogesund Castle was significantly altered during the 1860s when it received its current appearance. Architects Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander and Thor Medelplan redesigned the facade, introducing romantic Gothic elements such as towers and arched windows that define its silhouette. This 19th-century renovation gave the building its castle-like aesthetic, distinguishing it within the regional landscape. Today, the site stands as one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Vaxholm, drawing visitors interested in both its architectural heritage and its scenic surroundings within the protected nature reserve.

Access to the grounds is possible via a narrow road, local bus services, or various hiking trails that traverse the peninsula.
