Almnäs Castle

Almnäs Castle, also known as Almnäs slott, is a historic château located in the province of Västergötland in south-west Sweden. Situated approximately five kilometers south of the town of Hjo, the estate occupies a scenic position on a cove of a lake and is surrounded by a notable park. The main building was constructed between 1773 and 1776 under the commission of General Wolter Reinhold Stackelberg. Designed in the Baroque architectural style, the mansion stands as a representative example of Swedish country estates from the late eighteenth century.

Throughout its history, the property has changed hands among several prominent Swedish families, including the Sparre, Bielke, Horn, and Ehrensten clans. In 1859, it was purchased by Gustaf Sparre, who served as the first speaker of the Swedish Parliament, further cementing its connection to national political history. The estate was later acquired in 1898 by Baroness Marika Dickson from Gothenburg. These ownership transitions highlight the castle's long-standing status as a residence for the nobility and influential figures within Swedish society.

Today, Almnäs Castle remains a private property and is not open to the public. While specific details regarding its current internal condition are limited in public records, the exterior and surrounding grounds continue to define the local landscape near Hjo. As a preserved structure from the Baroque era, it contributes to the cultural heritage of Västra Götaland County. Visitors can view the front of the main building from a distance, appreciating its historical significance without accessing the interior or the private parklands that envelope the lakeside setting.
