Betzdorf Castle

Betzdorf Castle, known locally as Schlass Betzder, is a historic estate situated in the commune of Betzdorf in eastern Luxembourg. Located just northwest of the village and north of the CFL Line 30 railway, the structure serves as the global headquarters for SES, the world's largest satellite operator by revenue. SES acquired the property in 1986 and developed a large industrial center on the grounds, utilizing the castle's relatively remote location to ensure signal freedom for its adjacent Betzdorf Satellite Control Facility, which became operational in 1987.

The castle holds profound historical significance as the former residence of Hereditary Grand Duke Jean and his wife, Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium. The couple lived there from their marriage in 1953 until Jean ascended to the throne in 1964. During this decade, the castle served as the birthplace for all five of their children, including the current Grand Duke Henri and his siblings. Following the royal family's departure, the building functioned as a nursing home until 1982. In a unique chapter of its history, the vacant estate briefly served as a base camp for 3,000 Scouts celebrating the movement's 75th anniversary in July 1982 before sitting empty prior to its corporate acquisition.

Today, Betzdorf Castle stands as a blend of royal heritage and high-tech industry. It is important not to confuse this site with the nearby Berg Castle in Colmar-Berg, which serves as the communal headquarters. Under SES ownership, the castle has been preserved while surrounded by extensive commercial developments, marking its evolution from a royal nursery to a pivotal node in global telecommunications infrastructure.
