Baltadvaris Castle

Baltadvaris Castle, also known as White Manor Castle, is a historic fortified manor house located approximately two kilometers west of Videniškiai in the Molėtai District Municipality of Lithuania. Situated on the left bank of the Siesartis River, the site was strategically positioned with water surrounding it on three sides. Constructed in the mid-16th century, likely under the direction of Motiejus Giedraitis or his son Martynas Marcelis Giedraitis of the prominent Giedraičiai family, the structure was built in the Renaissance architectural style. Swedish builders and bricklayers were specifically invited to construct the masonry walls, earth ramparts, and wooden fortifications to protect the vital road connecting Vilnius to Riga from potential attacks originating in Livonia.

The castle holds significant historical value as a defensive stronghold that eventually transitioned into a residential estate. By 1630, financial difficulties forced the Giedraičiai family to mortgage the property, and by the mid-17th century, its strategic military importance had faded, leading to its conversion into a standard manor. Over subsequent decades, the complex was increasingly neglected and gradually fell into disrepair. Although local legends once attempted to link the site to the mythical Palemonid dynasty and Duke Daumantas, archaeological excavations have disproven these claims, confirming its actual origins in the 1500s.

Today, Baltadvaris Castle exists as a ruin, with only fragments of its former glory remaining. The surviving elements include sections of the main castle barn walls, the eastern gates, along with various foundations and cellars. These remnants are currently preserved under a protective shed to prevent further deterioration. While it no longer serves its original purpose as a fortress or a noble residence, the site stands as a tangible reminder of the region's defensive history and the architectural influence of Swedish craftsmen during the Renaissance period in Lithuania.
