Rokantiškės Castle
Rokantiškės Castle is a historic site located in the Naujoji Vilnia elderate of Vilnius, Lithuania. Situated on a high hill east of the city center near the Vilnia River, the original fortress dates back to the 12th century. While the initial structure served as a medieval defense, the castle underwent a significant transformation in the 16th century when it was rebuilt in the Renaissance architectural style. This reconstruction established it as a prominent residential manor and the primary seat of the influential Olshanski family, hosting notable figures such as Alexander, Yuri, and Pawel Olshanski.
The estate holds considerable historical significance due to its noble lineage and royal connections. Following the death of the last Olshanski heir, ownership passed to Queen Bona Sforza and later to the powerful Pac family. In 1636, the castle hosted King Władysław IV Vasa during his visit to Deputy Chancellor Stefan Pac. However, this era of prosperity ended abruptly during the Russo-Polish War when Cossack forces burned the complex on August 7, 1655. The destruction marked the end of its functional life, leaving the structure to decay into the ruins seen today.
Currently, Rokantiškės Castle exists solely as an archaeological site and ruin, distinguished as the only visible remains of a medieval castle within the boundaries of modern Vilnius. Although the buildings were demolished centuries ago, the location continues to yield archaeological findings that shed light on its past grandeur. The site stands as a testament to the region's turbulent history and serves as a unique landmark for those interested in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania's architectural heritage.
