Anadoluhisari
Anadoluhisarı, historically known as Güzelce Hisar or the Beauteous Fortress, is a medieval Ottoman military installation located on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey. Commissioned by Sultan Bayezid I and constructed between 1393 and 1394, it stands as the oldest surviving Turkish architectural structure within the city. The fortress occupies a strategic position at the narrowest point of the strait, covering an area of 7,000 square meters. Its design features a twenty-five-meter tall quadratic main tower enclosed by irregular pentagonal walls, originally supplemented by five corner watchtowers. The site was built upon the ruins of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Uranus, highlighting its long-standing significance as a defensive location.
The historical importance of Anadoluhisarı is deeply tied to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. Initially serving as a watch fort to blockade the Byzantine capital, its military capacity was later expanded by Sultan Mehmed II, who added thick walls, additional towers, and living quarters. To fully control maritime traffic, Mehmed II constructed a sister fortress, Rumelihisarı, on the opposite shore. Together, these structures successfully throttled sea access in 1453, facilitating the fall of Constantinople and the establishment of Istanbul as the imperial capital. Following the conquest, the complex served variously as a customs house and a military prison before eventually falling into disrepair over subsequent centuries.
In the modern era, the fortress underwent significant restoration efforts by the Turkish Ministry of Culture between 1991 and 1993, with further work initiated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in 2021. Today, Anadoluhisarı remains a prominent historical landmark that contributes to the picturesque scenery of the Beykoz district, standing alongside traditional timber yalı homes. Although it is currently preserved as a protected historical site, it is not open to the general public. The ongoing preservation aims to maintain its structural integrity and cultural value for future generations while respecting its status as a key monument of Ottoman engineering and history.
