Alara Castle

Alara Castle, known locally as Alara Kalesi, is a historic medieval fortification situated in the Alanya district of Antalya Province in southern Turkey. Perched atop a massive, steep rocky hill on the east bank of the Alara River, the site commands a strategic position approximately 35 kilometers southeast of Manavgat and 37 kilometers northwest of Alanya. Although an exact construction date is not specified in available records, the castle was originally built under the Byzantine Empire. Its imposing natural defenses made it a formidable stronghold, accessible only via a dramatic 180-step stairway tunneled directly into the rock, which leads visitors past a deep cistern to the upper levels.

The castle holds significant historical importance as a western outpost for the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia during the 11th century before coming under the control of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. Its primary function was to safeguard merchant caravans traveling along the Silk Road from banditry, protecting those stopping at the nearby Alarahan caravanserai. Inside the outer walls lies a citadel containing the ruins of a palace, garrison accommodations, a mosque, and a bathhouse. The fortress remained in use until 1231, when its lord surrendered the site upon realizing that the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I had successfully conquered the neighboring city of Alanya.

Today, Alara Castle exists as an archaeological site featuring well-preserved ruins that highlight its layered past under Byzantine, Armenian, and Seljuk rule. While the structure has faced the ravages of time, it remains a notable landmark due to its unique integration with the rugged landscape and its role in regional trade history. In 2011, the regional government of Antalya explored plans to restore the castle and officially open it to the public as a tourist attraction, aiming to preserve this cultural heritage site for future generations while highlighting its dramatic setting near the Mediterranean Sea.
