Žuta Tabija
wikipedia

Žuta Tabija, known in English as the Yellow Fortress or Yellow Bastion, is a historic cannon fort located in the Jekovac neighborhood of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Situated at the strategic entrance to the Walled City of Vratnik, near the Jajce Barracks and the Jekovac water reservoir, this military installation was constructed between 1727 and 1739. The fortress was built under the direction of Ahmed-paša Rustempašić Skopljak using sandstone, reflecting the defensive architectural needs of the era. As part of the larger Vratnik fortification system, it served as a critical observation and defense point overlooking the city and its approaches.

The site holds significant historical value due to its role in resisting the Austro-Hungarian campaign in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878. During this conflict, the fortress acted as one of the primary defense points against invading troops, marking it as a key location in the region's military history. Over the centuries, the structure has endured damage and undergone several reconstruction efforts to preserve its integrity. The most recent major renovation occurred in 1998, ensuring that the fortification remains a visible testament to Sarajevo's layered past. Today, it stands as a recognized National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Visitors to Žuta Tabija can explore its sturdy external walls and windows, which offer panoramic views of Sarajevo. While specific details regarding its current operational use are limited, the fortress remains an important cultural landmark within the architectural ensemble of Old Vratnik. Its preservation allows tourists and historians alike to appreciate the strategic importance of the site and the resilience of the structures that defended the city during pivotal moments in Balkan history.
