wikipedia

The Old Town of Visoki is a medieval royal castle town situated atop Visočica hill, which rises 213 meters above the modern town of Visoko in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Constructed during the 14th century, this strategic fortress features thick walls approximately two meters wide and an entrance guarded by two lookout towers on the southwest side. The site includes a small inner section known as Podvisoki, measuring roughly 60 by 25 meters, where remains of early medieval houses have been discovered. Its elevated position offered commanders an expansive view of the surrounding plains and distant mountain ranges, including Romanija, Jahorina, and Vlašić, making it an ideal location for defense and surveillance of the region.

Historically, the town served as a crucial administrative center for Bosnian rulers in addition to its military function. It was first mentioned on September 1, 1355, in a charter issued by Tvrtko I while he was still a young ban, marking the beginning of its documented significance. Over the following decades, various Bosnian kings and nobility, including Stjepan Ostoja, utilized the castle to issue important charters and legal documents, with records of activity continuing until at least 1436. The site eventually fell into disuse and was presumably abandoned before 1503, as it was omitted from a Turkish-Hungarian treaty of that year and later listed among abandoned towns in 1626.

Today, the Old Town of Visoki exists as an archaeological site and historical landmark rather than an inhabited structure. While the original buildings have not survived intact, the location preserves the remnants of its medieval past, including wall foundations and signs of former residential areas. Recognized for its role in the political life of medieval Bosnia, the site stands as a testament to the era when Visoko was a central hub for royal decrees and noble gatherings. Its ruins continue to offer visitors insight into the defensive architecture and political history of the Bosnian kingdom during the late Middle Ages.
