Zborov Castle

Zborov Castle, also known historically as Makovica, is a prominent ruined fortress situated on a hilltop above the village of Zborov in the Bardejov District of eastern Slovakia. Located within the traditional Šariš region, this stone structure dates back to the 13th century, with most historical evidence pointing to its construction around 1270 by Otto Biberstein, although some sources suggest an early 14th-century origin. The castle exhibits a blend of architectural styles, having evolved through Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque eras. It holds significant status as a listed item on the National Cultural Heritage list maintained by the Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic, reflecting its importance to the nation's history.

The site possesses a turbulent history marked by royal donations, family dynasties, and military conflict. First mentioned in royal charters from 1347, the castle served as the center of an extensive estate under owners like Peter Ónodi Czudar before passing to the Rozgonyi and Tarczay families. Throughout the centuries, it suffered repeated destruction during clashes between Hungarian kings and Polish troops, as well as raids by Hussite armies. Following the Battle of Mohács, ownership shifted to János Szapolyai. Today, the castle stands in a ruined condition but remains under the legal ownership of the Municipality of Zborov. A dedicated caretaker association actively manages the site, working towards its preservation while allowing visitors to explore the remnants of this once-strategic military installation.
