Ľubovňa Castle

Ľubovňa Castle, known locally as Ľubovniansky hrad, is a medieval fortress situated in the city of Stará Ľubovňa within the Spiš region of Slovakia. Perched at an elevation of 548 meters, the structure was originally constructed in the late 13th century during the era of the Kingdom of Hungary, with its first written record appearing in 1311. The castle served as a crucial royal property and border defense point, administered by royal castellans appointed directly by the monarch to manage estates, justice, and security. Its strategic location made it a significant site for diplomatic relations between Hungarian and Polish rulers throughout the centuries.

The castle holds profound historical significance, most notably as the meeting place in 1412 for King Sigismund of Hungary and King Władysław II Jagiełło of Poland, where they signed a pivotal pact of friendship and peace. During the turbulent period known as the Swedish Deluge, the fortress provided safe haven for the original Polish coronation jewels, which were stored there for over a century. Today, the site exists as a blend of permanent ruins and reconstructed sections, maintained under the care of Slovakia's Cultural Heritage Monuments. It remains open to the public and functions as a vibrant cultural center rather than a mere relic.

Visitors to Ľubovňa Castle can explore preserved rooms featuring barrel and Prussian vaults, a historical exhibition of period furniture and weaponry, and a chilling underground torture chamber. The castle chapel hosts a unique permanent exhibition displaying copies of the Polish crown jewels, commemorating their historical storage on-site. Additionally, an exhibition room accommodates seasonal displays, while the grounds below contain the Museum of Folk Architecture, an open-air museum dedicated to the traditional heritage of the Spiš region.
