Vipava Castle, known locally as Grad Vipava and historically as Schloss Alt Wippach, is a ruined fortress situated above the town of Vipava in southwestern Slovenia. Originally constructed by the Patriarchate of Aquileia, the site was first documented in 1275 under the name Castrum Wipaci superioris. The structure showcases Romanesque architectural elements, characterized by a rectangular layout of thick defensive walls that once enclosed two residential buildings. These living quarters were protected by an imposing defensive tower, which remains a defining feature of the ruins today.

The castle holds significant historical value as it served as the residence for the knights of Vipava until the mid-14th century. Following this period, it transitioned into a ducal fief and was granted to a long succession of noble and knightly families. Notable occupants included the knights of Rihemberk, the lords of Snežnik and Weissenfels, the powerful Counts of Celje, and the Herberstein barons. Over the centuries, ownership passed through the Counts Thurn, the Edling family, and the counts of Thrilegkh before finally reaching the counts Lanthieri.

Despite its strategic importance and noble lineage, the castle eventually fell into decay. The Lanthieri family abandoned the deteriorating structure during the 17th century, leaving it to the elements. Today, Vipava Castle exists as a ruin, with its remaining walls and tower serving as a testament to its medieval origins and complex feudal history. While no longer inhabited or fully intact, the site remains a recognized landmark within the Municipality of Vipava, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's rich aristocratic past and military architecture.
