Tongelaar Castle

Tongelaar Castle, also known as Kasteel Tongelaer, is situated between the towns of Mill and Gassel in the North Brabant province of the Netherlands. While the original structure was likely a motte-and-bailey castle, no physical remains of that earliest version have been discovered. The current complex incorporates elements dating back to the late 14th century, most notably a large tower that originally served as the gatehouse for the old bailey. Archaeological excavations conducted in 1964 revealed foundations of a square keep from this same period, constructed with thick brick walls and later expanded with annexes. The visible castle today is largely an 18th-century construction built upon the site of the previous bailey, featuring wings that replaced older buildings while retaining historical features like walled-up embrasures in the southern wall.

Historically, the castle evolved significantly over the centuries, with the original keep demolished prior to 1752. Until the 19th century, access to the property still required crossing a drawbridge, highlighting its defensive origins. Today, the estate has been repurposed for modern use while preserving its heritage. The main building functions as a popular venue for business meetings, weddings, art exhibitions, and concerts. Additionally, the historic tower now operates as an information center managed by Brabants Landschap, providing details about the surrounding environment to visitors.

The castle grounds are part of the extensive Landgoed Tongelaar nature reserve, which spans 490 hectares and serves as a significant habitat for approximately fifty European badgers. The reserve management specifically caters to the needs of this protected species while maintaining free public access via pedestrian and cycling routes. During the summer months, the castle itself is generally open to the public on Wednesdays and Sundays. Adjacent to the main structure, a farm known as De Benedenhof offers short-term stays, further integrating the historic site into the local community and tourism landscape.
