Croy Castle

Croy Castle is a historic brick fortress located in the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands, situated near the village of Aarle-Rixtel within the municipality of Laarbeek. Originally constructed during the 15th century, the structure exhibits architectural elements from various periods, including an original cellar, a right wing, and a distinctive round tower. Significant modifications occurred in the 18th century, most notably the addition of a crow-stepped gable and a new entrance. Although the castle likely suffered damage during the regional conflicts of the 16th century, research suggests its overall dimensions have remained relatively consistent throughout its long history.

The site holds considerable historical significance due to its association with numerous noble families, including Jacob van Croÿ, the Bishop of Cambrai, who owned the land in 1477. In the late 19th century, the last private resident, Lady Constance van der Brugghen, bequeathed the property to the local municipality with the specific stipulation that it serve as a home for impoverished elderly people. This charitable function was managed by religious sisters until 1977, when updated safety regulations necessitated its closure as a residence. Today, the castle is in good condition but is no longer inhabited; instead, it has been repurposed as an office building and is not open to the general public.

Beyond its architectural and residential past, the Croy estate is renowned for its brewing tradition dating back to 1795. While the beer brand was produced in Belgium for a period starting in 2004, ingredients continued to be cultivated on the estate grounds. Following a fire in 2006, the nearby restaurant was renovated to include a microbrewery, allowing production to return to Aarle-Rixtel, though bottling still occurs across the border due to environmental restrictions. The estate also maintains an agricultural presence through a herd of Rambouillet-Merino sheep, blending its noble heritage with ongoing commercial and farming activities.
