Stapelen Castle

Stapelen Castle is a historic moated fortress located in Boxtel, within the Dutch province of North Brabant. Originally constructed in the thirteenth century by the Van Randerode family, the estate first appears in historical records dating back to 1293. Over the centuries, ownership passed through several prominent noble houses, including the Van Boxtel, Van Horne, and Van Salm-Kyrburg families. The castle suffered forfeiture during the French Revolution following the execution of Frederick III of Salm-Kyrburg in 1794. In the nineteenth century, the property was acquired by Hendrik Mahie, a councilor from 's-Hertogenbosch, who commissioned a comprehensive renovation. This transformation reshaped the building into a neo-gothic structure, reflecting English stylistic influences that were fashionable at the time, though this design choice drew some contemporary criticism for deviating from traditional Dutch castle architecture.

For over a century, the castle served a distinct religious purpose rather than remaining a private residence. Following Mahie's death, his widow facilitated the transfer of the property to the Assumptionist fathers, who established a monastery there around 1915. The site became the headquarters for the Dutch province of the congregation, supporting their work in education, journalism, and pastoral care. Although the Assumptionists sold the castle in September 2018 to private property managers, specific agreements ensured the adjacent cemetery would remain active for burials for at least fifty more years. While the chapel of Saint George was decommissioned, the future functional use of the main building remains undetermined as it transitions into private ownership.

The origin of the name "Stapelen" remains an etymological mystery, with theories suggesting meanings ranging from foundation or depot to church tower. Despite the uncertainty surrounding its name, which was recorded as early as 1134, the castle stands as a significant landmark of regional heritage. Its evolution from a medieval manor to a revolutionary-era casualty, and finally to a modern religious center, illustrates the dynamic history of the North Brabant region. Today, Stapelen Castle represents a unique blend of architectural periods and social functions, waiting for its next chapter following the departure of its long-term monastic residents.
