Sunomata Castle

Sunomata Castle is a Japanese fortress located in Ōgaki, Gifu Prefecture, situated at the strategic confluence of the Sai and Nagara rivers. Originally constructed in 1567 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was then a minor retainer serving under the warlord Oda Nobunaga, the site holds immense historical significance. The structure was built during the Siege of Inabayama Castle using pre-fabricated sections transported to the location, allowing for rapid assembly. This engineering feat was so swift that it spawned the enduring legend that the castle was erected in a single night, earning it the alternate name Sunomata Ichiya Castle. Although the actual construction took several days under the direction of local figure Hachisuka Koroku, the speed of completion greatly elevated Hideyoshi's prestige and marked the beginning of his rise to power.

Architecturally, the original installation was less a grand castle and more a functional border fort designed to intimidate enemies. It consisted primarily of wooden palisades, simple watchtowers, and dry moats rather than the massive stone walls typical of later Japanese castles. The original structure no longer exists, but the site features a reconstructed tower completed in 1991. While this modern concrete structure is not historically accurate and was modeled after the nearby Ōgaki Castle, it serves as a local history museum. Inside, visitors can view exhibits including samurai armor, weapons, and models depicting the castle's authentic appearance during the Sengoku period.

Today, Sunomata Castle functions as a cultural landmark and museum dedicated to the region's military history. The grounds are particularly popular during the spring season when they become a noted spot for viewing cherry blossoms. Despite the reconstruction lacking architectural fidelity to the 16th-century original, the site remains an important tribute to Hideyoshi's ingenuity and the turbulent era of unification in Japan. It stands as a testament to the strategic importance of the location and the legendary speed with which the initial fortress was established to surprise opposing forces.
