Kiyosu Castle

Kiyosu Castle is a historic flatland-style Japanese fortress located in Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Originally constructed between 1394 and 1407 by Shiba Yoshishige, the castle was strategically positioned to guard the vital junction of the Ise Kaidō and Nakasendō highways connecting Kyoto and Kamakura. While the original structure served as a key defensive stronghold during the turbulent Sengoku period, it was demolished in 1609. The site remained without a main keep for centuries until a partial reconstruction was completed in 1989 to celebrate the centennial of the modern city of Kiyosu. Today, this reconstructed main keep stands as a prominent landmark and is open to the public for tourism and education.

The castle holds immense historical significance due to its deep association with the rise of the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga. Following the destruction of Orizu Castle in 1478, the Oda clan shifted their seat of power to Kiyosu, where Nobunaga's father, Oda Nobuhide, ruled lower Owari Province. After a series of internal clan conflicts involving his uncle Oda Nobutomo and brother Oda Nobuyuki, Nobunaga successfully seized control of the fortress in 1555. From this base, he consolidated power and launched the campaigns that would eventually unify Japan. The site witnessed pivotal moments of betrayal and succession that defined the era, including the forced suicide of Nobunaga's uncle and the assassination of his brother.

Currently, the castle serves as a cultural heritage site rather than a military installation. Although the existing buildings are modern reconstructions rather than original Edo-period structures, they faithfully represent the architectural style of the time and honor the legacy of the Oda clan. Visitors can explore the grounds to learn about the strategic importance of the location and the dramatic events that unfolded within its walls during Japan's feudal age. The facility remains an essential destination for those interested in the history of the Sengoku period and the life of Oda Nobunaga.
