Stora Hästnäs
Stora Hästnäs is a historic estate located on the island of Gotland, situated just outside the city of Visby in Sweden. The site is renowned for its exceptional medieval stone house, which dates back to the 1300s. This four-story limestone structure stands as the most well-preserved medieval residential building on the entire island outside the Visby city limits. Architecturally, the manor reflects the style of contemporary urban houses found within Visby, suggesting it may have originally been commissioned by a wealthy city burgher who desired a countryside residence. Distinctive features include decorative crow-stepped gables, a unique three-window gallery on the southern façade, and a round archway leading to the upper levels.
The internal layout of the building reveals a clear division of function typical of the era. The basement and ground floor contained primary living quarters equipped with a fireplace, while the first floor features an entrance gate that once bore decorative sculptures. Above this lies a room overlooking the southern gallery, likely used as summer living space or for hosting festivities. The top story was historically reserved for storage, accessible via a specific door designed for hoisting merchandise and supplies directly to the upper level. Although the current structure represents only the middle section of what was originally a considerably larger complex, it remains a striking example of medieval domestic architecture.
In terms of its modern status, Stora Hästnäs underwent a significant restoration in 1925 that included certain reconstructive elements to preserve its integrity. Today, the property is officially listed as a protected building and remains in private ownership. Despite being privately held, the estate is accessible to visitors, allowing the public to view this important piece of Swedish heritage. Its enduring condition offers valuable insight into rural life during the Middle Ages and the architectural connections between the countryside and the influential trading city of Visby.
