Sofiero Castle

Sofiero Palace, located in Helsingborg Municipality within the Scania region of Sweden, stands approximately five kilometers north of Helsingborg near the shore of Öresund. Originally a farm known as Skabelycke, the site was purchased in 1864 by Prince Oscar and Princess Sophia. The initial one-story structure was completed in 1865 and subsequently expanded to its current size between 1874 and 1876 after Oscar ascended the throne as King Oscar II. The building serves as a former royal country mansion that reflects the architectural evolution of Swedish royal residences during the late nineteenth century.

The estate holds significant historical value as a beloved retreat for multiple generations of the Swedish royal family. In 1905, it was gifted to Prince Gustaf Adolf and Crown Princess Margaret upon their marriage. The couple renovated the palace and established the extensive rhododendron gardens for which the location is now famous. It later served as the official summer residence for King Gustaf VI Adolf and Queen Louise until 1973. Upon the King's death, he bequeathed the property to the city of Helsingborg, ensuring public access to the grounds he cherished deeply.

Today, Sofiero is open to the public and functions primarily as a major tourist attraction centered around its magnificent gardens, which feature nearly 500 varieties of rhododendrons and a collection of modern art. The former palace building has been repurposed to house a restaurant, café, and occasional art gallery. During summer months, the expansive lawns host large outdoor concerts featuring international music stars. The site remains a well-preserved historic house museum and a vibrant cultural hub, while its legacy is further commemorated by a local beer brand named after the estate.
