Stare Selo
Stare Selo is a historic village located in the Lviv Raion of Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, situated approximately 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Lviv. Straddling both banks of the Davydivka River, this settlement was first documented in 1442 and has endured significant turmoil throughout its existence. Historical records note that the village was destroyed by Ottoman Turkish forces in 1498 and later suffered devastation at the hands of Crimean Tatars in 1648. Today, it functions as part of the Davydiv rural hromada with a population of over two thousand residents, maintaining connectivity to the regional capital through regular bus services and nearby railway stops.
The village is primarily renowned for the extensive ruins of Stare Selo Castle, a formidable fortress constructed between 1584 and 1589 for the powerful Ostrogski family. Designed by the architect Amvrosii Prykhylny, the structure exemplifies late Renaissance architecture and underwent further renovations in 1642 and 1654 to strengthen its defenses. Although centuries of conflict and neglect have taken their toll, substantial portions of the site remain visible today. Visitors can still observe massive wall sections reported to be between 14 and 16 meters high, along with three surviving towers that testify to the castle's original grandeur and strategic importance.
In recent years, the historical significance of the fortress has been acknowledged through modern preservation efforts. In 2021, regional heritage initiatives selected the site for digitization projects involving 3D scanning to document and protect the remaining architectural elements. While the castle currently exists as a ruin rather than a functional building, it stands as a prominent landmark within the Ukrainian landscape. The site continues to attract interest from historians and tourists alike, serving as a tangible link to the region's turbulent past and its era of noble fortification during the Renaissance period.
