Skala-Podilska Castle

Skala-Podilska Castle is a historic fortress situated in the town of Skala-Podilska within the Chortkiv Raion of Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. Perched dramatically on a rocky promontory above a ravine of the Zbruch River, the site was strategically accessible only from the south. Originally erected in the 14th century by the Koriatowicz prince family, the structure holds the status of an architectural monument of national importance. Its strategic location and formidable natural defenses made it a significant stronghold in the region for centuries, overseeing the surrounding landscape from its elevated position.

The castle underwent significant expansion after 1515 under Stanislaw Lanckoroński, acting on the orders of King Sigismund I the Old. The Lanckoroński family retained ownership until 1706, after which the property passed to the Tarło family. While the original fortress once occupied the entire promontory, today only a massive 16th-century tower remains at the base of the hill. Within the courtyard lie the ruins of a two-story palace built by the Tarłows, which historically divided the grounds into northern and southern sections. Later, in 1914, the Gołuchowski family constructed a new one-story palace on a different site within the complex.

Currently, the site exists primarily as ruins, serving as a tangible reminder of the area's turbulent past and noble lineage. The remaining structures, including the old tower and the fragmented palace walls, stand as testament to the various architectural phases the castle endured from the medieval period through the early 20th century. Despite its dilapidated condition, the location remains a recognized landmark, preserving the memory of the powerful families who shaped its history and the defensive architecture that once protected this corner of western Ukraine.
