Designed as the central landmark of the park, it officially opened on July 17, 1955, coinciding with the grand debut of Disneyland itself. Standing 77 feet tall, the castle was intentionally built to a smaller scale than its counterparts in other Disney parks to create an inviting atmosphere that encourages guests to walk through its archways rather than feel dwarfed by its presence. The architecture draws heavy inspiration from the 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, blending elements of German, French, and English medieval styles to evoke a classic storybook aesthetic.

Historically, this castle holds significant importance as the original centerpiece of the Disney theme park empire, setting the visual standard for all subsequent magic kingdoms worldwide. Unlike the taller Cinderella Castle found in Florida or the Enchanted Storybook Castle in Shanghai, the Anaheim version serves as a walk-through attraction featuring detailed dioramas that narrate the story of Princess Aurora. While a duplicate version once operated at Hong Kong Disneyland from 2005 until its closure in 2018 to make way for the Castle of Magical Dreams, the California original remains in pristine operating condition.
