Hearthstone Castle

Hearthstone Castle, located at 18 Brushy Hill Road in Danbury, Connecticut, is a historic residence constructed between 1895 and 1899. Designed by architect Ernest G. W. Dietrich, the structure showcases a unique blend of Shingle Style and Norman architecture. Originally built as a honeymoon cottage for portrait photographer E. Starr Sanford, the castle was initially known as Sanford Castle before passing through several prominent owners. The building is notable for its construction methods; all stone was quarried directly on-site and transported via a dedicated railroad, while intricate woodwork was imported from Italy and wrought iron fixtures were locally crafted by the Cephas B. Rogers Company.

The property holds significant historical value, having served as a wedding gift for Irene Parks Jennings in 1918, at which time it was renamed Hearthstone Castle, likely due to its eight stone fireplaces. It remained in the Jennings family until 1987, when the entire Tarrywile Estate was sold to the City of Danbury. That same year, the castle was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Despite its designation, the building suffered from neglect under municipal ownership, eventually leading to a collapsed roof. Today, the castle sits within Tarrywile Park and includes several contributing structures across its 7.2-acre grounds.

Current plans focus on revitalizing the deteriorating landmark rather than restoring it to a private residence. The City of Danbury and the Tarrywile Park Authority have approved renovations to convert the site into a three-season pavilion and observation deck. This adaptive reuse project aims to stabilize the existing structure while adding modern amenities such as picnic facilities, seating areas, and an educational center for historical exhibits. Although the timeline for these improvements has faced delays, the initiative represents a committed effort to preserve this architectural oddity and make its scenic views accessible to the public once again.
