Sisak Fortress

Sisak Fortress is an early modern lowland fortification located in the suburb of Sisak, Croatia, situated strategically on the bank of the Kupa River just before it flows into the Sava. Constructed between 1544 and 1550 under the orders of the Bishop of Zagreb, the structure was designed by the Milanese master builder Petar de Mediolanus to defend against escalating Ottoman incursions. The fortress features a distinctive triangle shape built primarily from brick and hewn stone, with thick walls exceeding thirty meters in length. Each of its three corners is reinforced by a round tower topped with a conical roof, while the river itself provides a natural line of defense along the western and southwestern sides.

The site holds immense historical significance as the location of the pivotal Battle of Sisak in June 1593. During this conflict, a massive Ottoman army led by Hasan Predojević was decisively defeated by joint Croato-Slovene-Austro-Hungarian forces, marking a turning point that halted further Ottoman conquest in the region. Over the centuries, the fortress endured various damages, including partial destruction of its northwest tower during World War II shelling, yet it was consistently repaired following each incident. Although it requires some renewal today, the structure remains partially preserved and stands as a protected cultural good within Croatia.

Currently, the fortress serves a cultural purpose rather than a military one, housing collections of the Sisak Town Museum, which was established in 1951. It remains open to the public, allowing visitors to explore its historic walls and learn about the region's turbulent past. Despite changing ownership multiple times after the Ottoman threat subsided in the seventeenth century, the fortress has maintained its status as a key landmark in Sisak-Moslavina County. Its enduring presence offers a tangible connection to the defensive architecture of the early modern period and the critical military history of Central Europe.
