Gvozdansko Castle
Gvozdansko Castle is a historic fortress ruin located in the village of Gvozdansko within Sisak-Moslavina County, central Croatia. Situated between the towns of Dvor and Glina and near Zrin Castle, the structure was originally constructed from limestone during the second half of the 15th century. It served as a strategic military installation and administrative center for the prominent Zrinski noble family, who controlled the site due to their valuable mining rights in the region. The castle was first officially mentioned in historical records in 1488 and became a frequent destination for notable figures like Nikola III Zrinski and his son Nikola Šubić Zrinski, who visited to inspect local mines and the minting operations.
The site holds profound historical significance due to the legendary Siege of Gvozdansko, which took place between October 1577 and January 1578. During this conflict, Ottoman forces led by Ferhat-paša Sokolović launched a massive assault with 10,000 soldiers against the small Croatian garrison. The siege ended tragically in an Ottoman victory only after the defenders froze to death during a harsh winter, lacking wood for fires yet remaining at their combat positions holding their muskets. This act of extreme bravery reportedly stunned the Ottoman commander upon his entry into the captured fortress. Ottoman rule over the area persisted until 1718 following this pivotal event.
Today, Gvozdansko Castle exists as a ruin, standing as a solemn monument to the resistance and sacrifice of its former defenders. While the structure no longer serves a military or residential function, its remnants offer a tangible connection to the turbulent history of the Banovina region during the conflicts between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires. The site remains an important landmark for those interested in Croatian medieval history and the legacy of the Zrinski family, preserving the memory of one of the most dramatic episodes in the nation's struggle for sovereignty.

- Notes
- The fortified town of Gvozdansko was first mentioned in 1488, and was built by the princes of the Zrinski family to protect the silver and lead mines. These strategic metals from the Gvozdansko mines were put to the best use for the economic rise of the Zrinski princes, but also for the long-term successful defense of their estates in Pounje. Nikola III. Zrinski began to mint silver coins from silver, and his son Nikola Šubić Zrinski continued to do so. It is not known exactly when the mint in Gvozdansko was founded, but the first written record dates back to 1525.
