Sheikhupura Fort

Sheikhupura Fort is a historic 17th-century military installation located near the city of Sheikhupura in Punjab, Pakistan. Originally constructed around 1607 during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, the structure stands as a significant example of Mughal architecture, featuring an average height of 11.5 meters. The emperor's autobiography records that he entrusted the project to Sikander Muin, a local landlord, establishing the site initially as Jahangirpur. Today, the fort is owned and maintained by the Department of Archaeology and Museums under the Government of Pakistan, having been declared a protected monument in 1967 to ensure its preservation for future generations.

The fort possesses a rich and layered history reflecting the region's changing powers. It underwent drastic alterations during the Sikh era, acquiring numerous buildings adorned with exquisite frescoes. In 1808, forces led by Kharak Singh conquered the site, after which Maharaja Ranjit Singh granted it as a jagir to his wife, Datar Kaur, who rehabilitated the complex and resided there until her death. Later, under British colonial rule, the fort served as the District Headquarters for Gujranwala until 1881 and subsequently functioned as a police station. Notably, it was also used as a place of house arrest for Maharani Jind Kaur, the last queen of Ranjit Singh and mother of Duleep Singh, highlighting its strategic importance through centuries of political transition.

In recent decades, efforts have been made to restore the crumbling glory of this architectural heritage. Recognizing its cultural value, the United States government provided a grant of 850,000 USD in 2010 through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation to support extensive restoration works. These initiatives aim to repair the damage accumulated over centuries of varied usage and neglect, ensuring that the unique blend of Mughal and Sikh artistic elements remains intact. The site currently stands as a testament to the diverse historical narratives of Punjab, attracting interest from historians and tourists alike.
