Red Fort, Muzaffarabad

The Red Fort, also known locally as Rutta Qila or Muzaffarabad Fort, is a historic 16th-century fortification situated in Muzaffarabad, within the Azad Jammu and Kashmir region of Pakistan. Construction of this strategic military installation began in 1559 under the Chak dynasty of Kashmir, who initiated the project to defend against anticipated Mughal invasions. Although the Mughal Empire annexed the region in 1587, causing the fort to temporarily lose its primary strategic importance, work on the structure continued intermittently. It was finally completed in 1646 during the reign of Sultan Muzaffar Khan, the founder of Muzaffarabad and a ruler from the Bomba Dynasty. The site stands as a testament to centuries of regional political shifts and military planning.

Architecturally, the fort demonstrates sophisticated design expertise, characterized by its unique positioning surrounded on three sides by the Neelum River. The northern section originally featured terraces with steps leading directly to the riverbank, while the main eastern gate was engineered specifically to withstand flood hazards. Over the centuries, the fort saw renewed activity when Maharaja Gulab Singh of the Dogra dynasty ordered its reconstruction and extension in 1846 for military operations. His successor, Maharaja Ranbir Singh, completed these enhancements, and the Dogra military utilized the site until 1926. Following the construction of a new cantonment, the historic fort was abandoned and eventually decommissioned after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.

Today, the Red Fort is owned and managed by the AJK Tourism and Archeology Department. While parts of the northern walls have suffered damage over time and the inn that once stood at the entrance now exists only in traces, the structure remains a significant historical landmark. Its imposing presence and riverine setting continue to attract visitors interested in the rich chronicle of Kashmiri history. The fort serves as a silent witness to the various dynasties that ruled the area, from the Chaks and Mughals to the Dogras, preserving the architectural heritage of the region for future generations.
