Shagai Fort

Shagai Fort is a strategic military installation situated in the Khyber District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, approximately thirteen kilometers from the town of Jamrud. Perched at an elevation of 847 meters above sea level, the fort commands a panoramic view overlooking the historic Khyber Pass. Constructed in 1927 by the British Indian Army, the structure was built using stone and brick to serve as a frontier fort during the colonial era. Its primary historical purpose was to monitor and control movement through the pass, playing a significant role in various frontier operations throughout the twentieth century.

Currently, the fort remains operational and is under the ownership and control of the Pakistan Army, specifically garrisoned by the Khyber Rifles, who are traditionally known as the guardians of this critical mountain passage. While the site is not open to the general public, it holds continued geopolitical importance as a venue for high-level trilateral flag meetings involving military officials from Pakistan, NATO, and Afghanistan. These gatherings underscore the location's enduring relevance in regional security and diplomatic coordination between neighboring forces and international coalitions.
