Shea's Castle

Shea's Castle, also known historically as The Painted Rocks or Sky Castle, is a unique private residence located in the Antelope Valley of Los Angeles County, California. Situated just west of Lancaster and south of the California Poppy Reserve, this solid granite structure was built in 1924 by developer Richard Peter Shea. Constructed over a two-year period on approximately 1,500 acres of desert land, the eight-bedroom estate features a distinctive architectural style reminiscent of an Irish castle, reflecting Shea's origins as a New Yorker who sought the dry Southern California climate for his health.

The property holds a tragic yet fascinating history tied to the economic turmoil of the early twentieth century. Following the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Shea lost his fortune, leading to the bank seizing the castle. Personal tragedy struck soon after when his second wife died and Shea committed suicide in 1932. Despite these dark beginnings, the castle survived through various owners, including Thomas Stewart Lee, heir to the Don Lee Network. During this era, the famous horse Trigger was trained on the grounds, and later tenants added a runway, dam, and lake to the expansive property, which also contains natural springs and ancient pictographs.

Today, Shea's Castle remains largely unchanged and continues to serve as a private residence, though it has gained fame as a filming location for numerous productions. Its dramatic appearance has made it a popular backdrop for movies such as Blood of Dracula's Castle and Babylon, as well as classic television series like Airwolf, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Starsky & Hutch. While development plans have surfaced occasionally over the decades, the castle retains its original character, standing as a resilient landmark of Mojave Desert history and architectural curiosity.
