Castle Rock

Castle Rock, also known as Osborn Castle, is a historic estate located in Garrison, New York, perched atop a hill overlooking the Hudson River. Constructed in 1881 by architect Jarvis Morgan Slade, the residence was originally commissioned as a summer home for William H. Osborn, the former president of the Illinois Central Railroad. The structure is a striking example of castle-like architecture, featuring rough-cut stonemasonry, a prominent conical-roofed round tower, and a consistent red slate roof dotted with varied dormers. Designed to maximize its scenic setting, the home includes extensive porches and verandas that offer panoramic views of the river and the surrounding Hudson Highlands, making it a visually dominant landmark visible from West Point and nearby Route 9D.

The property holds significant historical value due to its long association with the influential Osborn family, including noted paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn and his conservationist son. Although the original 154-acre grounds have been subdivided over time, the main house and several contributing structures remain intact. These outbuildings include Woodsome Lodge, a rustic log cabin on the mountain summit, a spring-fed wooden water tank, a stone arch bridge, and a gatehouse. The estate was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, recognizing its architectural integrity and cultural importance within the region.

In recent decades, Castle Rock has undergone careful preservation to maintain its grandeur. Extensive restoration work completed in 2010 repaired the slate roof, tower, dormers, and chimneys, ensuring the building's structural stability. In 2021, the estate was purchased by George Carroll Whipple III, a local philanthropist and third-generation Putnam County resident. Today, the castle stands as a well-maintained private residence and an iconic symbol of the Hudson Highlands, continuing to captivate observers with its unique blend of rugged stone construction and picturesque riverside location.
