El Cid Castle

El Cid Castle was a distinctive and controversial landmark located in the Sunnyslope neighborhood of Phoenix, Arizona, specifically at the corner of 19th Avenue and Cholla Drive. Construction on this unique structure began in 1963 and was finally completed in 1980. Designed to resemble a Moorish Castle, the building was originally intended by its creator, Dr. Kenneth E. Hall, to serve as a massive recreational complex featuring a bowling alley. The ambitious project planned for a 65,000-square-foot facility spanning twenty acres, which was supposed to house thirty-two bowling lanes, an ice skating rink, multiple nightclubs, a French restaurant, and dedicated recreation rooms for teenagers.

The castle is historically significant due to the colorful and contentious background of its builder, Dr. Kenneth Hall, a local physician who sought the title of King of Sunnyslope. Hall, who previously operated the North Mountain Hospital with an on-site primate zoo, illegally diverted over sixteen thousand dollars in Medicare funds to finance the castle's construction. The structure was named after El Cid, the famous eleventh-century Spanish hero. Despite the grand vision for a community hub, the project became mired in controversy regarding its funding and zoning, marking it as a peculiar chapter in the development history of Sunnyslope before its eventual annexation by Phoenix.

Today, El Cid Castle is classified as a former structure, indicating that the building no longer stands in its original capacity or has been demolished. While it once represented a bold, albeit illicit, attempt to bring large-scale entertainment to the growing desert community, it ultimately serves as a reminder of Dr. Hall's eccentric ambitions and the regulatory challenges faced during mid-twentieth-century urban expansion in Arizona. The site remains a notable footnote in local lore, remembered for its unusual architectural style and the scandalous circumstances surrounding its creation.
