Sfântu Gheorghe

Sfântu Gheorghe, also known by its Hungarian name Sepsiszentgyörgy, serves as the seat of Covasna County in the Transylvania region of central Romania. Situated at an elevation of 555 meters, the city lies within a scenic valley along the Olt River, nestled between the Baraolt and Bodoc mountain ranges. First documented in 1332, it stands as one of the oldest urban settlements in Transylvania. The town derives its name from Saint George, the patron saint of its local church, and historically held significance as the economic and administrative center of the former Hungarian county of Háromszék. Its name reflects the migration history of the local Székely population, who moved to this area from the Sebes region.

The city developed notably during the second half of the 19th century while part of the Kingdom of Hungary, witnessing the rise of light industry including textile and cigarette factories. Following World War I and the subsequent Hungarian–Romanian War, the town passed under Romanian administration in 1919 after the Union of Transylvania with Romania was declared. Architecturally, the area is characterized by historic landmarks such as the fortified Reformed church, the Mikó Székely college, and various heritage buildings like the Fogolyán house, which reflect its diverse cultural past involving Székely, Saxon, and Romanian influences.

Today, Sfântu Gheorghe functions as a vibrant municipal hub that administers two nearby villages, Chilieni and Coșeni. It maintains its status as a key cultural and educational center in the region, hosting institutions like the county library and an art gallery. The city preserves its rich historical identity while serving as a modern gateway to the surrounding natural landscapes, including stone mines near Őrkő and the scenic areas around Benedekmező. With a population governed by local leadership elected through democratic processes, it remains a vital component of Romania's multicultural heritage in the Carpathian basin.
