Feldioara

Feldioara is a commune located in Brașov County, within the historic Transylvania region of Romania. Situated approximately fifteen kilometers north of the city of Brașov, it lies in the northern reaches of the Burzenland area on the left bank of the Olt River. The administrative unit comprises three distinct villages: Feldioara, Rotbav, and Colonia Reconstrucția. The settlement serves as a notable transport hub, crossed by national roads linking Brașov to Sighișoara and Târgu Mureș, while its railway stations connect the capital Bucharest with the Hungarian border.

The central village of Feldioara is historically significant for its medieval fortress, which dominates the local landscape. Although long attributed to the Teutonic Knights, recent studies suggest the structure was actually constructed by the local community. The name Feldioara derives from the Hungarian word földvár, meaning clay fortress, while its German name, Marienburg, translates to Fortress of the Virgin Mary. Today, the ruins of this once-mighty defensive structure remain visible, standing as a testament to the region's complex medieval past and the influence of the Transylvanian Saxons who inhabited the area for centuries.

The commune also includes Rotbav, known for its fortified Saxon Evangelic church, and Colonia Reconstrucția, a settlement with a unique industrial heritage. Originally established in the 1930s around a brick factory and known as Colonia Bohn, this village was later renamed during the Communist era. The area combines ancient architectural remnants with layers of history ranging from Saxon colonization to modern industrial development. Currently functioning as an active commune, Feldioara preserves its cultural landmarks while maintaining its role as a strategic connection point in east-central Brașov County.
