Schloss Rechnitz

Schloss Rechnitz, also known as Schloss Batthyány, was a significant former castle located in the center of Rechnitz within the Oberwart district of Burgenland, Austria. Originally established in the 13th century, the estate became the hereditary property of the prominent Batthyány family after King Ferdinand I granted it to Ferenc Batthyány in the mid-16th century. The massive complex featured a trapezoidal floor plan surrounding a grand arcaded courtyard, which was spacious enough to drill an entire Hussar regiment. At the heart of this courtyard stood a distinctive fountain adorned with a pelican, representing the coat of arms of the Batthyány lineage. The site also holds historical importance for fostering a local Jewish community, initiated by protection letters granted by the family in the late 17th century.

The castle's ownership evolved over time, eventually passing to Heinrich Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1906 and later to his daughter, Margit von Batthyány, who was the final owner. During the closing stages of World War II, the SS requisitioned the building for use as a headquarters and to house forced laborers. The site is infamously linked to the Rechnitz massacre in March 1945, where Jewish-Hungarian forced laborers were killed during a party held within the castle walls. Following these events, the structure suffered heavy damage from the Red Army and was subsequently dismantled.

Today, Schloss Rechnitz no longer stands as a complete edifice. After being largely destroyed in 1945, the majority of the architectural elements were removed, leaving only a few remnants such as sections of the retaining wall. While the grand residence that once dominated the town center has vanished, its historical footprint remains through these fragments and the documented events that transpired there. The location serves as a somber reminder of both the aristocratic history of the Batthyány and Thyssen families and the tragic atrocities committed on its grounds during the final days of the war.
